Vitamin deficiency is commonly caused by malabsorption syndromes, chronic malnutrition or chronic illness and is very prevalent in India. Patients usually present with vague symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, breathlessness and reduced immunity.

Medications:

Predominant vitamin B complex, folic acid, zinc and vitamin C deficiency

  • Cap. Meganuron OD Plus (Methylcobalamin 1500 mcg, Pyridoxine 5 mg; Folic acid 5 mg) – one capsule a day.
  • Tab. Limcee (Vitamin C 500 mg) – one tablet a day.

Predominant vitamin D deficiency

  • Tab. FDC D3 (Cholecalciferol 60000IU) – one tablet once a  week for 8 weeks followed by once a month.

Predominant vitamin A deficiency

  • Tab. Supradyn (vitamin A 10,000IU; other vitamin and minerals) – one tablet once a day for 2 months.

General advice:

  • Suggest dietary changes according to vitamin deficiency.
  • Advice adequate sun exposure for low vitamin D.

 Investigations:

  • Vitamin profile
  • Check for malabsorption syndromes such as coeliac disease, Crohn’s disease and irritable bowel syndrome.

Referral:

Consider referring to gastroenterologist if patient fails to respond to treatment or presents with additional complications.
