Upper respiratory tract infection consists of infections around sinuses, pharynx and larynx. Patients may present with signs and symptoms specific to sinusitis, pharyngitis or laryngitis or a combination of these.
Medications:
- Nasal spray Nasivion (Oxymetazoline 0.05%) – 2 sprays in each nostril twice a day till symptoms improve.
- Tab. Okacet (Cetirizine 10 mg) – one tablet at bedtime for 7 days.
- Strepsils Lozenges (2,4-Dichlorobenzyl alcohol and Amylmetacresol) – one lozenge thrice a day till symptoms improve.
- Tab. Moxikind CV 625 (Amoxicillin 500 mg, Clavulanic acid 125 mg) – 1 tablet thrice a day for 10 days.
- Cap. Flora BC (Lactic acid bacillus, Pyrixodine, Niacinamide, Folic acid) – one tablet thrice a day for 10 days.
Supportive treatments:
- Tab. Dolo 650 (Paracetamol 650 mg) – 1 tablet thrice a day for 7 days.
- Cap. Sinarest Vapocap (Camphor, Chlorothymol, Eucalyptol, Menthol, Terpineol) – one capsule in hot water for steam inhalation.
General advice:
- Advice voice rest
- Suggest soft diet if patient complains of difficulty in swallowing
- Stop smoking
- Avoid polluted environment
Investigations (as determined by underlying condition):
- Complete blood count – to rule out raised white cell count
- X ray of sinuses – paranasal sinuses (Waters view) to check for soft tissue shadows due to fluid or polyps
- Streptococcal Rapid Antigen test (RADT)/throat culture – for Streptococcus infection
- Laryngoscopy – to look for extent of inflammation and to rule out other pathologies.
Referral:
Consider referral to ENT specialist if patient fails to improve inspite of above treatment or if presents with additional complications.
