Rhinitis is inflammation of the mucous membrane inside the nose with symptoms of runny nose, stuffy nose, fever, cough.
Medications:
- Spray Nasivion S (normal saline) nasal spray thrice a day for 7 days.
- Tab. Okacet (Cetirizine 5 mg) 1 tablet once a day at bedtime for 7 days.
- Nasal spray Nezalast (Fluticasone 50 mcg, Azelastine 140 mcg) one spray in each nostril every day. This is contraindicated during pregnancy.
- If no improvement in 7 days, then start tab. Wymox (Amoxycillin 500 mg) 1 tablet thrice a day for 5 days.
Investigations:
- Complete blood count – to rule out raised white cell count
- Skin testing – for chronic cases to rule out allergic sinusitis
General advice:
- Warm fluids
- Chicken soup
- Avoid cold food and beverages
- Avoid dusty and polluted environments
- Maintain good ventilation
Referral:
Consider further referral to ENT specialist or secondary care in case of clinical deterioration or if patient has any other complications.
