Dry eyes Painful eyes, eye irritation, stinging sensation in eyes with no evidence of infection
Stye Localised painful swelling of eyelids, excessive tearing, occasional local abscess
Sinusitis Painful sinuses, blocked nasal passage, frequent headaches or fever
Eye strain History of prolonged exposure to computers etc., eye irritation, excessive tearing with no evidence of infection
Glaucoma Severe eye pain, visual disturbance, blurred vision and raised intraocular pressure
Trauma History of eye injury, damage to eye structures
Allergic reaction Red discolouration of skin, skin elevation, blisters and exposure to sensitive substances
Influenza (common flu) High fever, runny nose, sore throat, muscle pains, headache and tiredness
Migraine Unilateral headache associated with nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light, sounds and smells. May be associated with pre-migraine aura.
Whooping cough Prolonged cough (classic whoop sound), low grade fever and apnoeic spells in infants
Measles Rhinitis, small greyish-white spots on the buccal mucosa (Koplik spots) and blotchy maculopapular rash
Shingles Unilateral blistering of eye or rash on face, fever, skin sensitivity over affected site
Rheumatic fever Fever, skin rash, palpitations, swollen lymph nodes, cardiac murmur and positive throat swab for haemolytic streptococci
Psoriasis Localised redness of skin, dry and flaky skin with silvery scales
Lyme disease Fever, circular skin rash (erythema migrans), arthralgia, fatigue, joint pains, history of tick bites
Leptospirosis High grade fever, muscle ache, jaundice, red eyes, history of close association with animals and birds or prolonged exposure to contaminated water
Filariasis (Loa loa) Patient from endemic areas, dry cough associated with groin pain, leg swellings and positive blood microscopy for loa loa worms
Chicken pox Fever, skin rash with or without blisters, itching, headache and tiredness
