Laryngitis is inflammation of the larynx and characterized by hoarseness, pain on swallowing and sensation of fullness around throat area. It is usually a short-lasting condition related to local inflammation but occasionally may lead to chronic laryngitis.
Medications:
- Nasal spray Nasivion (Oxymetazoline 0.05%) 1 spray in each nostril thrice a day for 7 days
- Tab. Okacet (Cetirizine 10 mg) 1 tablet at bedtime for 7 days
- Tab. Dolo (Paracetamol 650 mg) 1 tablet thrice a day for 7 days
- Strepsil lozenges – 1 lozenge thrice a day for 7 days
- Tab. Pan 40 (Pantaprazole 40 mg) 1 tablet once a day on empty stomach for 7 days
- If hoarseness persist beyond one week – Cap. Mox 500 (Amoxicillin 500 mg) 1 tablet twice a day for 10 days
General advice:
- Voice rest
- Avoid polluting environments
- Avoid whispering
- Steam inhalation
- Drink warm fluids
- Stop smoking and avoid alcohol
Investigations:
- Complete blood count – to identify raised white cells count
- Laryngoscopy – to look for extent of inflammation, rule out other pathologies
Referral:
Consider referring the patient to ENT specialist if there is inadequate response to above therapies or if patient presents with additional complications.
