Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the conjunctiva causing redness and discharge from the eyes.

Types of conjunctivitis:

  • Bacterial conjunctivitis – associated with purulent discharge, conjunctival erythema and swelling of the eye lid.
  • Allergic conjunctivitis – associated with itching and conjunctival redness.
  • Viral conjunctivitis – associated with watery discharge, mild itching, no pain and conjunctival redness.

Medications:

  • For bacterial conjunctivitis – eye drops Ciplox (Ciprofloxacin 0.3% w/v) one drop four times a day for 7 days.
  • In severe case add tab. Acuclav 625  (Amoxicillin 500 mg, Clavulanic acid 125 mg) one tablet twice a day for 5 days.
  • For allergic conjunctivitis – eye drops Cromal Forte (Sodium Cromoglycate 4% w/v) one drop four times a day for 7 days.

General advice:

  • Remove offending agent
  • Apply cold fomentation for allergic conjunctivitis
  • Apply warm fomentation for bacterial and viral conjunctivitis

Referral:

Consider referral to ophthalmologist in case of complications, reduced vision of if patient fails to respond.
