Bursitis is inflammation and swelling of a bursa (fluid filled sac covered by synovial membrane) between bones and tendons or near the joins. The commonest areas for bursitis are greater trochanter, knee, elbow or shoulder. Patients present with history of pain and reduced movements which can mimic arthritis.
Medications:
- Tab. Ibugesic ASP (Aceclofenac 100 mg, Paracetamol 325 mg, Serratiopeptidase 15 mg) 1 tablet twice a day with food for 5 days.
- Tab. Pantakind 40 (Pantoprazole 40 mg) one tablet a day on empty stomach for 5 days.
- Gel Powergesic 2X (Diclofenac 2.32%, Methyl Salicylate 10%, Menthol 5% w/w) to be applied over painful area thrice a day for 7 days.
General advice:
- Consider patient for ultrasound therapy.
- Ice application for 15 minutes every 2 hours.
- Consider application of kinesiology tape to reduce local strain.
- Gradual exercise to improve muscle tone.
Investigations:
- Ultrasound of bursa – in severe cases it may show evidence of fluid collection or thickening of surrounding area

Consider referral to physiotherapist if symptoms fail to improve and for advice on improving mobility
