Oral or dental infection consists of infective changes commonly caused by poor oral hygiene. It is associated with both aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms. Such infections present serious risks to patients with autoimmune conditions, immune compromised conditions and patients with valvular heart disease and hence needs to be treated promptly.
Medications:
- Tab. Ibugesic ASP (Aceclofenac 100 mg; Serratopeptidase 15 mg; Paracetamol 325 mg) – one tablet twice a day for 3 days.
- Tab. Pantakind 40 (Pantoprazole 40 mg) – one tablet 30 mins before breakfast once a day for 5 days.
- Tab. Odoxil (Cefadroxil 500 mg) – one tablet twice a day with breakfast and dinner for 10 days.
- Tab. Flagyl 400 (Metronidazole 400 mg) – one tablet thrice a day with breakfast, lunch and dinner for 7 days.
- Cap. Flora BC (Pyridoxine, Niacinamide, Folic acid, Lactic acid bacillus) – one capsule twice a day (after breakfast and dinner) for 10 days.
- Mouthwash Hexidine (Chlorhexidine 0.2% w/v) – rinse mouth thoroughly four times per day.
If Cefadroxil is not tolerated – give tab. Doxy-1 L-DR Forte (Doxycycline 100 mg, Lactobacillus) – one tablet twice a day for 10 days.
General advice:
- Advice good oral hygiene and adequate brushing of teeth twice a day
- Avoid foods high in sugar and sweets
- Advice frequent mouth rinsing
- Regular dental checks up
- Avoid smoking, tobacco consumption or bettle nut (supari) consumption
Investigations:
- Full blood count
- Dental X ray
Referral:
Consider referral to dentist if patient fails to respond to the above treatment or presents with additional complications. Patient may require surgical intervention in cases of abscess.
