Superficial skin infections such as impetigo, boils, furuncle, carbuncle, folliculitis, cellulitis occur due to bacteria, most likely by Staphylococcus aureus.

Medications:

  • Ointment Supirocin (Mupirocin 2% w/w) to be applied locally thrice a day for 10 days.
  • Tab. Odoxil 500 (Cefadroxil 500 mg) 1 tablet twice a day for 10 days.
  • Cap. Flora BC (Probiotic and prebiotic) 1 capsule twice a day for 10 days.
  • Tab. Limcee (Vitamin C 500 mg) 1 tablet twice a day for 7 days.
  • Tab. Combiflam (Ibuprofen 400 mg, Paracetamol 325 mg) 1 tablet thrice a day for 5 days.
  • Consider incision and drainage in large, resistant lesions with fluid collection.

General advice:

  • Warm compressions can help with the pain as well as swelling.
  • Clean the affected skin with antiseptic.
  • Keep the affected area clean and dry.

Investigations:

  • Pus swab culture – for culture and antibiotic sensitivity
  • Blood sugar – to rule out diabetes in recurrent furuncles.

Referral:

Consider referral to general surgeon if patient fails to respond to the above treatments or presents with additional complications.
