Rhinitis is inflammation of the mucous membrane inside the nose with symptoms of runny nose, stuffy nose, fever, cough.

Medications:

  • Spray Nasivion S (normal saline) nasal spray thrice a day for 7 days.
  • Tab. Okacet (Cetirizine 5 mg) 1 tablet once a day at bedtime for 7 days.
  • Nasal spray Nezalast (Fluticasone 50 mcg, Azelastine 140 mcg) one spray in each nostril every day. This is contraindicated during pregnancy.
  • If no improvement in 7 days, then start tab. Wymox (Amoxycillin 500 mg) 1 tablet thrice a day for 5 days.

Investigations:

  • Complete blood count – to rule out raised white cell count
  • Skin testing – for chronic cases to rule out allergic sinusitis

General advice:

  • Warm fluids
  • Chicken soup
  • Avoid cold food and beverages
  • Avoid dusty and polluted environments
  • Maintain good ventilation

Referral:

Consider further referral to ENT specialist or secondary care in case of clinical deterioration or if patient has any other complications.
