Glossitis is inflammation and ulceration of tongue. Stomatitis and mucositis is inflammation and ulceration of mouth, lips and gastrointestinal tract.
Medications:
- Gel Orahelp (Benzalkonium chloride 0.01% w/w, Choline salicylate 8.7% w/w, Lignocaine 2 % w/w) apply over the ulcerated area before meals for 7 days.
- Syp. Benadryl (use as a mouth wash) thrice a day for 7 days.
- Tab. Beplex forte (Vitamin B complex; Vitamin C) 1 tablet twice a day for 15 days.
General advice:
- Avoid consumption of tobacco.
- Avoid eating spicy, oily foods and hot beverages.
- Avoid eating candy, chewing gum and aerated drinks.
- Eat soft foods.
- Maintain good oral hygiene and brush twice a day.
- Use a soft bristled toothbrush when brushing your teeth.
- Apply ice on the ulcer if possible
- Reduce stress levels.
- Saline mouth rinses thrice a day
Investigations:
- Biopsy – this is considered in longstanding cases which fails to respond (to rule out oral malignancy).
Referral:
Consider referral to ENT specialist if the patient fails to respond or presents with additional complications.
