Lice infestation of body or hair by the parasitic insect, louse and patients often present with itching over the affected areas. It is endemic in developing countries and clusters. In severe cases it may be accompanied by a nonspecific dermatitis (erythematous macules, papules, wheals). Body lice can transmit diseases like epidemic typhus, trench fever, louse borne relapsing fever.

Medications:

  • LotionĀ Permed (Permethrin 5% w/w) – apply over affected area and rinse after 10 minutes. Repeat application in 10 days.

In resistant cases:

  • Tab. Ivermectol 12 (Ivermectin 12 mg) – 1 tablet for one day and repeat on 10th day.
  • Tab. Odoxil 500 (Cefadroxil 500 mg) 1 tablet twice a day for 10 days for secondary scalp infections.

General advice:

  • Personal hygiene is paramount.
  • Regular use of lice repellant shampoo can help.
  • Machine wash all washables (e.g. hats, linen, clothing) in hot water (100 degree F).
  • Store exposed un-washables in plastic bags for 2 weeks.
  • Cleand and preferably vacuum all affected areas including furniture .
  • Soak combs and brushes in hot water (130 degree F) for 15 min.

Consider further referral to dermatologist if patient fails to respond to the above treatment or presents with additional complications.
