Dysmenorrhea is cramping, colicky or dull pain that usually centers in the lower mid-abdomen, radiating towards the lower back or thighs during menstruation.
Medications:
- Tab. Cyclopam (Dicyclomine 20 mg, Paracetamol 500 mg) 1 tablet 4 times a day for colicky pain.
- Tab. Ovral -L (Ethinyl estradiol 0.03mg and Levonorgestrel 0.15 mg) 1 tablet per day from 5th day of menstrual cycle until 25th day (to reduce the flow and associated pain).
General advice:
- Drink plenty of fluids.
- Applying heat pack or hot water bottle to lower abdomen and lower back may help.
- Reduce strenuous activities during menstruation.
Investigations:
- Urine pregnancy test – to rule out pregnancy.
- USG Abdomen and pelvis – to rule out other causes of abdominal pain.
Referral:
Consider further referral to gynecologist in case of persistent symptoms to evaluate further.
