Thrombocytopenia is characterised by low platelet counts (normal range 150,000 to 450,000 per microlitre). It can lead to symptoms suggestive of bleeding tendencies such as spontaneous bruises, nose bleeds, bleeding gums or menorrhagia. Patients may present with petechial rashes or generalised weakness. Thrombocytopenia is a condition with multiple underlying causes, and it is very important to treat the underlying condition first.
