Sprain is an injury to ligaments or joints leading to pain, swelling around a localised area and reduced mobility. Strain usually refers to similar pathology affecting muscles or tendons.

Medications:

  • Gel Powergesic 2X (Diclofenac 2.32%, Methyl Salicylate 10%, Menthol 5% w/w) to be applied over painful area thrice a day for 7 days.
  • Tab. Dolokind MR (Aceclofenac 100 mg, Paracetamol 325 mg, Chlorzoxazone 250 mg) 1 tablet twice a day for 5 days AND
  • Tab. Pantakind 40 (Pantoprazole 40 mg) one tablet a day on empty stomach for 7 days.

General care:

  • Rest.
  • Ice application/cold compression for 20 mins every 2 to 3 hours for 3 days.
  • Compression and support of the painful part.
  • Elevation and early mobilization of the affected part.

Investigations:

  • X-ray of the affected joint if swelling persists and patient is unable to weight bear on the affected joint – to rule out fracture.
  • Ultrasound of the joint to rule out fluid collection or other pathology.

Referral:

Consider referral to physiotherapy in case of prolonged immobility.
