Essential tremor is a neurological disorder characterized by uncontrollable shaking or tremors in different parts and on different sides of the body. Areas affected often include the hands, arms, head, larynx (voice box), tongue, and chin. It is important to rule out other degenerative neurological conditions prior to treatment.
Medications:
- Cap. Embeta XR 12.5 (Metoprolol 12.5 mg) 1 capsule once a day. Gradually adjust the dose for optimum control (maximum dose – 400 mg/day) OR
- Tab. Ciplar 40 (Propranolol 40 mg) 1 tablet twice a day. Gradually increase the dose till maximum of 320 mg/day. Avoid in COPD or obstructive pulmonary disease.
- If needed add tab. Gabator 300 (Gabapentin 300 mg) 1 tablet once a day. Gradually increase till maximum dose of 1200 mg thrice a day.
General advice:
- Recommend regular exercises including physiotherapy based advice
- Stop alcohol intake
- Advice adequate walking aids to prevent falls.
Investigations:
- Complete blood count – to rule out infections.
- Fasting blood glucose – to rule out diabetes.
- Thyroid function test – to rule out hyperthyroidism.
