Inflammation of mouth, lips, tongue or repeated formation of benign and non-contagious mouth ulcers (aphthae) in otherwise healthy individuals. This is a fairly common condition but often under-reported. Chronic non-healing ulcer may be a sign of neoplasm.
Medications:
- Gel Orahelp (Benzalkonium chloride 0.01% w/w, Choline salicylate 8.7% w/w, Lignocaine 2 % w/w) apply before meals for 7 days.
- Tab. Beplex forte (Vitamin B complex, Vitamin C, Biotin 260mcg) 1 tablet twice a day for 15 days.
- Syrup Benadryl (Diphenhydramine, Ammonium chloride, Sodium citrate). Dilute with four parts water and rinse mouth with this solution thrice a day for 7 days.
- Saline rinses – add one teaspoon salt (5 mg) in 1 litre of water and rinse mouth with this solution thrice a day for 7 days.
General advice:
- Avoid spicy, oily foods, hard foods and hot beverages
- Avoid candy, chewing gum and aerated drinks
- Eat soft foods
- Maintain good oral hygiene
- Use a soft bristled toothbrush when brushing your teeth
- Apply ice on the ulcer area if possible

Chronic non healing ulcers need to be reviewed by oral surgeon for further evaluation and to rule out neoplasm.
